Fix For Cumulative Update Error on Server 2022 (0x800f0905)
Fri, 17 Oct 2025 16:40

We have had an issue with some of our Windows 2022 Standard servers and cumulative Windows updates. Normal updates would install fine but the cumulative ones would fail month after month.

After a lot of digging we found it would appear to be a problem with the language packs, specifically on any server that was installed as an Evaluation version and then made into a full version.

Every time we would try to install a cumulative update we would see the 0x800f0905 error, or a similar one.

To fix this issue;
Check the language packs installed, you probably don't have one. Install the one that matches your current Windows display.

On ours our "Windows display" was set to "English (United States)" but this language pack was not installed. So we installed it (skipping the text-to-speech and Handwriting modules) and the updates were fine from then on, didn't even need to reboot after installing the language pack.

We have seen this fix work on three different 2022 std servers which all picked up the problem at different times.
